Kathleen, Libby’s great-grandmother, was the thirteenth of thirteen children. She requested that her grandchildren call her Kathleen instead of Grandmother or other more traditional familial moniker because she just looked too young to be a grandmother! A meticulous housekeeper, Kathleen was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and loved to entertain her chapter’s ladies.
Kathleen occasionally treated her granddaughter Sarah to visits at the Miller & Rhoads' Tea Room in downtown Richmond. The ever-popular Tea Room featured regular fashion shows and signature menu items such as the Missouri Club, Brunswick Stew, and Chocolate Silk Pie. Miller & Rhoads was at one time was referred to as "the South's largest department store." As Kathleen and Sarah passed through the store's entrance with its engraved metal name plaque, they would be sporting the requisite downtown-visiting dresses and white gloves. Gloves were removed, of course, so that the happy pair could enjoy their luncheon that sometimes included the famous multi-layer Miller & Rhoads’ Missouri Club Sandwich.
