Rachel’s Aunt Sa and Uncle Rich met in Chicago in the early 1980’s. They love the city because of its energy, its natural and architectural beauty, and its rich history and unique culture. From its infancy as a group of cabins on the Chicago River in 1835, Chi-town has grown into a major metropolitan area of the U.S. When Mrs. O’Leary’s infamous cow ignited Chicago in 1871, the people of the City of Big Shoulders turned tragedy into opportunity. Inner city buildings were rebuilt, streets were laid out far more efficiently, and the Chicago River was reversed so that it feeds into the Mississippi River instead of Lake Michigan, creating a more sanitary metropolis.
Chicago has also grown into a town with a fine culinary reputation. Deep-dish pizza (is there any other kind?) originated in the Windy City and Chicago-style hot dogs are a real treat. Rachel’s uncle and aunt suggest that you try a Chi-dog; they insist that you’ll be able to feel the cool breeze off Lake Michigan.
Ingredients:
Vienna Beef hotdogs, steamed or boiled, NOT broiled
poppy seed buns, steamed
neon green pickle relish
yellow mustard
pickled sport peppers
white onion, chopped
tomato wedges
cucumber slices
dill pickle spear
celery salt
NO ketchup!
Directions:
Assemble ingredients and enjoy.
Uncle Rich says that a cold beer is a necessary accompaniment to a hot dog; Aunt Sa says iced tea is just fine!
